Anaya Davis Grabs 21 Rebounds as Rockford Gives #14 Wisconsin Lutheran all it can Handle

31

Rockford University Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 8

The Rockford University women's basketball team (6-5, 2-3 NACC) played toe-to-toe with the unbeaten and 14th-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors (9-0, 5-0 NACC) on Saturday afternoon. Although the Regents fell by a final score of 53-37, Rockford gave Wisconsin Lutheran fits the entire game, and was within striking distance late in the fourth quarter. After trailing by as many as 20 in the first half, the Regents got back to within ten points on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, but unfortunately, were never able to get any closer. Defensively, Rockford played another outstanding game, holding the Warriors to their lowest point total of the season. The Regents held the Warriors to just 37.9% shooting, including 22.7% shooting from three-point range. However, Rockford also struggled shooting the ball in its first game since December 16, 2021. The Regents shot just 23.1%, including 16.7% from beyond the arc. The most outstanding performance of the day from either team came from Rockford University freshman Anaya Davis. Davis scored 13 points and grabbed an incredible 21 rebounds. She becomes just the third RU women's basketball player to record at least 20 rebounds in a game over the last 15 years (Megan Lawler - 20, 01/15/11 and Diamond Williams 21, 12/20/14) and was just one rebound shy of tying the RU school record (Staci Brown, 22).

Regent Recap

  • Wisconsin Lutheran scored the first six points of the game as a part of a 10-1 run, to take and early nine-point lead with 3:29 left in the first quarter.
  • Rockford was able to trim one point off the lead over the final few minutes, as the Warriors took a 14-6 advantage into the second.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran again opened the quarter strong, this time with a 13-1 run to take its largest lead of the game at 27-7.
  • With less than two minutes left in the half and the Warriors still leading by 19, Rockford used a 9-2 spurt to make it a 32-20 game heading into the break. Anaya Davis, Jocelyn Callahan and Kiara Stevens hit back-to-back-to-back triples to trim the WLC lead down to just twelve.
  • The third quarter went back-and-forth with neither team able to get anything going offensively. Each team scored just seven points in the period, as WLC maintained its twelve-point lead heading into the fourth.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran would score the first four points in the fourth, before Rockford scored the next six, and cut the Warrior lead down to just ten. Anaya Davis scored five of the six points, including a putback layup to make it 43-33 with 6:12 left in regulation.
  • Unfortunately, that is as close as the Regents would get the remainder of the way. Wisconsin Lutheran scored ten of the last fourteen points en route to a 53-37 win.
Stat Leaders
