The Rockford University women's basketball team (16-10, 9-8 NACC) hosted and defeated MSOE (7-15, 5-10 NACC) in the first round of the NACC tournament by a final score of 52-45. It was a historic win, women's basketball got its first NACC tournament win in program history. Rockford had five prior appearances but came up short each time, but that wouldn't happen this year. It was a close game up until the fourth quarter when Rockford was able to pull away for a short period. MSOE didn't give up however, as the Raiders charged back, bringing the score within four points. MSOE missed a layup in the closing seconds and Natalie Posadas hit three free throws to put the game out of reach. The Regents will now head to number two St. Norbert for their quarterfinal game next week.
Regent Recap
- The two sides traded points to start play to get the score to 7-5 in favor of MSOE. Rockford opened up its offense shortly after and scored nine unanswered points including four from Anaya Davis and 3 from Roshanda Stevens.
- The low-scoring first quarter finished with RU in the lead 14-7.
- Audrina Terhune opened the second quarter with a three pointer eleven seconds in to create the Regents first double-digit lead of the game.
- MSOE came charging back over the next 4:33 of play, scoring twelve unanswered points to take back the lead 19-17.
- Rockford took the lead into halftime however, Anaya Davis hit a free throw and Jocelyn Callahan hit a huge three pointer with 51 seconds left before the half. RU was back in the lead 21-19.
- Anaya Davis and Audrina Terhune got the second half started for the Regents. Davis hit a pair of free throws and Terhune hit a layup.
- MSOE won the rest of the quarter, scoring 13 compared to Rockford's eight. Da Sani Hannah came up big for Rockford in this span, scoring six of those points and help keep the Regents in the lead 33-32 at the end of the third quarter.
- The start of the fourth quarter saved the Regents from defeat. Rockford built its largest lead of the night on a 15-3 run to put the Regents up 48-35.
- MSOE responded with a 10-1 run that put them back in striking distance at 49-45.
- The Raiders immediately called a timeout and fouled after to send Natalie Posadas to the free throw line. Posadas hit both to put them up 51-45 and out of reach of MSOE.
- MSOE's Grace Ellington took the ball into the lane on the next possession but missed the layup, landing in Posadas' hands with three seconds remaining. Natalie Posadas hit one of two and the clock expired with a final score of 52-45 in favor of the Regents.
- Anaya Davis finished tied for the team high in points with 11 and pulled in 12 rebounds. She also had 2 blocks.
- Roshanda Stevens had 11 points as well. Stevens also recorded 7 rebounds.
- Audrina Terhune led in assists with 6. She also grabbed 5 rebounds and scored 6 points.
- Naynay Clark had a team-high 2 steals with 9 rebounds and 6 points.
