In a June 2 news release, Sen. Steve Stadelman (D-Rockford) announced funding for Davis Park in Rockford.

"The opening of the boat docks is the first step to transforming Davis Park into a vibrant gathering spot that capitalizes on the riverfront and its proximity to other public and private investments downtown, especially Embassy Suites,” he wrote on his website. “A strong downtown is essential to the economic growth of the entire Rockford region.”

The June 2 press release from Stadelman's office said that "Stadelman dedicated $450,000 of Rebuild Illinois capital funds to purchase and install the docks this year and another $3 million to the overall project. An additional $500,000 competitive state grant was awarded to pay for construction of a canopy stage and outdoor concert venue."

"All of these features enhance the downtown experience, improve the quality of life for residents and attract tourists who spend money that supports small businesses," Stadelman said. "I'm proud to be able to deliver a majority of the funding for this piece of the puzzle, and I will continue to work to rebuild our downtown."

According to Go Rockford, Davis Park at Founders Landing is seven acres of grass and paved walkways, and hosts a variety of festivals, Friday Night Flix during the summer and other events.

Improvements to Davis Park were announced in August 2022, when the City of Rockford unveiled a $6 million-plus renovation plan. The Rockford Register Star reported on Aug. 16 that the plan was to demolish the Lorden building, fill funding gaps and provide matches for additional grants the city could use. The revitalization project uses $2.5 million in local redevelopment fund money, as well as nearly $3.6 million in capital improvement funds from the State of Illinois. Planned projects include an amphitheater, restrooms, a splash pad, a concrete skate park and more.

Davis Park will host Friday Night Flix, showing "Sonic 2" on July 7 and "Minions" on Aug. 4.

According to The Rockford Register Star, Davis Park is the only city-owned park in Rockford.

On June 5, The City of Rockford announced via its Facebook page that the docks at Davis Park are now open for public use.

The Davis Park Facebook page announced the opening of those docks on June 2.  "We’re excited! The Boat Docks are now officially open for public use!" the announcement read. "The docks measure 72-feet long by 16-feet wide and can accommodate four to six boats, depending on size. Located near the Embassy Suites by Hilton Rockford Riverfront, the project was paid for by a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity supported by Senator State Senator Steve Stadelman."

Davis Park is at 320 South Wyman St. To learn more, call 815-968-5222 or email boxoffice@asmrockford.com.
