Last fall, the Mayor’s Office of Domestic and Community Violence Prevention, in partnership with its Grassroots team, announced a new project in coordination with local barbers and beauticians – the Barbershop Project. To kick off its work, the Barbershop Project is hosting a Free Haircut Event at Comprehensive Community Solutions, 917 South Main Street in Rockford, on Monday, January 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The public is invited to come meet barbers and beauticians, receive free haircuts, learn about the Barbershop Project and enjoy games and refreshments. Haircuts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Good housing that is safe and in good shape is hard to come by all over the country. The kind of housing you have can affect how well you do in school and at work, how well businesses are able to hire help, and how healthy you are. So, the City has hired an expert to study the housing situation in Rockford. They want to achieve several goals with this study:
Rock River Disposal will be collecting Christmas trees for two consecutive weeks from City of Rockford residents on their normally scheduled garbage pick-up day from Monday, January 8, through Thursday, January 18, 2024. Non-bagged trees should be placed alongside resident’s regular garbage and must be free of all ornaments, stands, lights, tinsel, and other decorative materials. Trees that exceed 4 feet in height must be cut in half.
The City of Rockford Public Works Water Division is conducting a water service line inventory study. This study will gather information about the materials of water service lines throughout the City and help the Water Division more accurately identify where lead service lines are currently so that they can be targeted for removal. We need your help!
The City of Rockford’s Health and Human Services Department is pleased to announce the availability of Health Literacy Micro-Grant for community-based organizations dedicated to promoting health literacy and COVID-19 adoption within our city. These micro-grants are designed to support initiatives that promote better understanding of health information and empower residents to make informed decisions about their well-being, including accessing the updated COVID-19 vaccine.

Tonight, the Finance and Personnel Committee passed the FY 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). This CIP provides for significant investment in improving the City’s infrastructure and is the largest proposed in City history, utilizing $322 million of secured local and leveraged outside agency funds to improve the infrastructure in Rockford. In addition to being the largest 5-year plan in City history, this plan also proposes the implementation of the largest single year of construction to date in 2024.
The holiday season is fast approaching, and Mayor Tom McNamara needs your help! Each year, the Mayor sends out holiday cards to companies and organizations that help our community move forward. Once again, he’d like to use a card designed by a Rockford elementary or middle school student.
The City, in partnership with Rockford Park District, Chicago Rockford International Airport, Winnebago County Government, Rockford Housing Authority and Rock Valley College, will host the Second Annual Cutting the Red Tape event on Wednesday, November 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the UW Health Sports Factory. Participants will learn how to do business with local government agencies.

On Monday, September 18, the City of Rockford will go live with a new web portal for FOIA requests. The new program will make it easier and more efficient to comply with the Freedom of Information Act. To make a FOIA request, please use the online portal.

State Rep. Joe Sosnowski (R-Rockford) sounded an alarm about the need for responsibility and transparency in budgeting in a Sept.1 Facebook post. He shared a link to the Center Square, which said the Illinois state budget is highly dependent on federal money.
Changes came to Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles offices on Sept. 1. Senator Dave Syverson warned his constituents of these changes in an Aug. 29 Facebook post, as well as his feelings about these changes.
