Rockford, Illinois has launched a new Downtown Entertainment District that allows residents and visitors aged 21 and over to purchase and carry beer, wine, or cocktails in designated cups from 14 participating bars and restaurants. The initiative, created in partnership between the River District Association and the City of Rockford, aims to provide patrons with additional options while boosting economic activity and vibrancy in the downtown area.

John Groh, the River District board president, expressed excitement about the project, stating, "Looking at the success of these districts in cities across the country, it seemed like a no brainer to make it happen in downtown Rockford." Groh also praised the cooperation between the River District Association and Mayor Tom McNamara's team, saying, "I have to say, working with Mayor McNamara and his team on this new idea was a great experience."

Mayor Tom McNamara himself expressed enthusiasm for the program, highlighting the many incredible businesses and business owners in downtown Rockford. He believes the Entertainment District will give residents and visitors another reason to visit and enjoy the area.

The newly designated Downtown Entertainment District went into effect on December 1, 2023, at 4 p.m. and is one of the first of its kind in the State of Illinois. The district operates from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends. Participating bars and restaurants will stop serving alcohol in designated cups by 10:30 p.m.

The Entertainment District encompasses a designated geographic area in downtown Rockford, allowing patrons to carry their drinks in branded cups into participating retail, service, and entertainment businesses within the district. A map of the district and detailed information can be found on the River District Association's website.

The City Council's approval of the program demonstrates their forward-thinking leadership and commitment to the growth of the community, according to River District board president John Groh. 3rd Ward Alderman Chad Tuneberg also emphasized the importance of the downtown area, stating, "By adding an Entertainment District, we will build on making our downtown a destination to live, work, and play."

The participating bars and restaurants where to-go cups can be purchased include Abreo, Ambiance Cuisine Cocktails & Catering, District Bar & Grill, Embassy Suites Rockford Riverfront, J.R. Kortman Center for Design, LimaMar Restaurant & Cocktail Bar, Magpie, Mo’s Coffee & Cafe, Octane, Prairie Street Brewing Company, Social Urban Bar & Restaurant, Taco Libre, and Wood & Brick Tavern.

Several retail and service businesses within the district also welcome beverages purchased in designated cups. These businesses include Elora Home Interiors, Lucette Holistic Salon and Boutique, Maze Books, Rockford Art Deli, Salvaged by Sonya, S’mores Collectibles and Vintage, TNT Funnel Cakes, and Veterans Memorial Hall.

The launch of the Downtown Entertainment District in Rockford is expected to enhance the overall experience for residents and visitors, offering them the opportunity to enjoy their favorite drinks while exploring the vibrant downtown area.
