The City of Rockford is inviting public comments on the recently completed Rockford Industrial Property Survey. The survey aims to raise awareness of Rockford's industrial history and assist leaders in making informed land use and redevelopment decisions in these historic areas.
The survey identified 90 structures that were included in the period of significance. It is important to note that the survey did not include any structures already listed on the National Register or as contributing structures in National Register Historic District.
Funding for the survey was made possible through a grant provided by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, specifically the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office and its Certified Local Government Grant Program. The City of Rockford also contributed matching funding to support its interest in local preservation and educate the public on its historic industrial resources. Landmark Illinois also provided funding through its advocacy program to raise awareness of Rockford's historic resources.
The public comment period for the survey will begin on February 6 and conclude on March 8, 2024. During this time, interested individuals can submit their comments electronically to the email address scott.capovilla@rockfordil.gov. A digital version of the survey can also be found on the City of Rockford's website.
This initiative is a step towards preserving Rockford's rich industrial heritage and ensuring that future development respects and incorporates its historical significance. By involving the public in the decision-making process, the City of Rockford aims to gather valuable insights and perspectives from the community.
As Scott Capovilla, the representative from the City of Rockford, stated, "The purpose of the survey is to heighten awareness of Rockford's rich industrial history and to assist leaders in making informed land use and redevelopment decisions in these historic areas." This highlights the importance of public participation in shaping the future of Rockford's industrial properties.
The City of Rockford encourages all interested individuals to take part in the public comment period and contribute their thoughts and ideas. By doing so, they can play a role in preserving the city's heritage and ensuring a sustainable and inclusive future.
