The City of Rockford Human Services Department has announced that applications are now open for the 2024 Community Action Garden grants. These grants aim to support groups and organizations interested in growing fresh, affordable food for the Winnebago and Boone County community.
According to the City of Rockford, the Community Action Gardens project is designed to assist people in growing fresh produce that may otherwise be unavailable, especially to low-income families and individuals. The project also aims to promote healthier lifestyles, increase community ownership and spirit, and connect, educate, and encourage entrepreneurial projects.
The grant is open to various groups, including neighborhoods, schools, faith-based organizations, and other groups interested in learning gardening skills and are willing to donate a portion of the produce to those in need. Organizations that collaborate and include education, nutrition, or expanded involvement and outreach to groups such as children, seniors, and veterans are also encouraged to apply. Additionally, neighborhoods and other groups that will use the gardens as part of an effort to increase neighborhood and community vitality or unity are eligible for the grant.
The benefits of participating in the Community Action Gardens project are numerous. Not only does it allow people to grow their own fresh produce, but it also enables them to know where and how their food is grown and choose items that may not be available locally. Furthermore, gardening has been shown to reduce stress, increase a sense of wellness and belonging, and provide a unique opportunity for people from diverse backgrounds to work together towards common goals.
The City of Rockford has designated various locations where community gardens can be established, including vacant neighborhood lots and church grounds. Interested groups and organizations are encouraged to submit their applications by noon on Friday, March 8.
In a statement, the City of Rockford Human Services Department emphasized the importance of the Community Action Gardens project, stating, "We believe that this initiative will not only provide fresh, affordable food to those in need but also foster a sense of community and promote healthier lifestyles. We encourage all eligible groups to apply and join us in making a positive impact on our community."
