Senate Republicans Introduce Legislation to Reform Prisoner Review Board
Responding to a controversial decision by Governor JB Pritzker’s Prisoner Review Board (PRB) to release a convicted domestic abuser, allegedly leading to the murder of a young boy less than 24 hours later, State Senator Dave Syverson (R-Cherry Valley) stated, "Crosetti Brand’s case is just the latest in a string of controversial decisions made by the PRB." The Senate Republican Caucus has introduced reforms to prioritize victims, depoliticize Board appointment process, and ensure accountability for PRB decisions.
At an April 2 news conference, Senate Republicans unveiled legislation to reform the PRB by putting victims first, requiring experience ahead of politics, and increasing transparency and accountability. Senator Syverson emphasized the need for immediate victim notification and yearly training for board members on domestic violence and sexual assault.
In another initiative, the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools highlighted the severity of the teacher shortage issue in the state, with more than 90% of schools grappling with vacancies. Senate Republicans are sponsoring legislation to address this crisis, including bills that streamline processes for licensing retired teachers and providing tax credits for participating teachers.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported a measles outbreak in migrant shelters in Chicago, with most cases connected to the Pilsen shelter. The department also confirmed tuberculosis cases in city shelters. Meanwhile, the Illinois Poison Center is raising awareness about household dangers, urging residents to take preventive measures against accidental poisonings.
