State Representative Joe Sosnowski, R-Rockford, issued a statement following the passage of the FY25 state budget by the Illinois House of Representatives in the early morning hours on Wednesday.

“The new state budget sets a record-high of more than $53 billion in spending, a reckless 32% increase in the last five years under JB Pritzker’s watch. The budget includes nearly $1 billion in tax increases and the budget includes an outrageous $1 billion in spending on non-citizens health care expenses for undocumented migrants."

Sosnowski criticized Governor Pritzker's approach to sales tax on groceries: "The Governor is also playing politics by eliminating the state’s one percent sales tax on groceries starting in 2026 but allowing local governments to impose their own grocery tax of up to one percent without having to get voter approval via referendum, meaning that no tax relief is coming for most Illinois families."

He further commented on allocations within the budget: "Finally, the budget includes hundreds of millions in spending on pork projects in districts represented by Democrats, with zero for every other community throughout the state. This budget is partisan politics at its most shameless, with no respect shown or relief provided to the Illinois families struggling to afford the cost of living under Joe Biden and JB Pritzker’s failed leadership.”

Representative Sosnowski serves the 69th District, which includes portions of Winnebago, Boone, and McHenry Counties.
