Illinois is the second highest corn-producing state in the nation, making National Corn on the Cob Day a significant occasion for local farmers and residents. Illinois boasts 11 million acres dedicated to corn production, with each acre roughly equivalent to the size of a football field.
According to data from the National Agricultural Statistics Service and the National Corn Growers Association, Illinois ranks No. 2 nationally for corn production. In 2020 alone, corn production in Illinois generated over $7 billion in cash receipts.
The majority of corn farms in America, approximately 95%, are family-owned. In Illinois, nearly 98% of the corn grown is field corn, which is primarily used for livestock feed and various products such as snacks. Sweet corn represents about 2% of the state's total corn production.
Additionally, Illinois ranks No. 3 in the nation for popcorn production. Corn has over 4,200 uses ranging from livestock feed and ethanol to consumer goods like cornbread, soda, latex paint, and diapers.
A bushel of corn weighs around 56 pounds—approximately the weight of a large bag of dog food—and contains about 72,800 kernels. An average ear of corn holds around 800 kernels.
National Corn on the Cob Day serves as an opportunity to celebrate these contributions by enjoying locally-grown produce and supporting Illinois farmers.
