High temperatures are expected to persist across Illinois. Residents are advised to take precautions to stay safe during the extreme heat.

Officials recommend staying out of the sun as much as possible. If exposure to sunlight is unavoidable, it is advised to wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and a wide-brimmed hat, and seek shade or use awnings whenever possible.

Residents should avoid overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities. It is also suggested to wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that covers as much skin as possible to prevent sunburn.

Hydration is crucial; consuming plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids such as water, diluted juices, and electrolyte solutions is recommended. Carbonated drinks should be avoided.

To keep homes cool, residents are encouraged to keep lights low or off, draw shades, and avoid using ovens. Rooms should be well ventilated with air conditioners and fans. If air conditioning or fans are not available, windows should be kept open for ventilation. However, it is noted that fans will not prevent heat-related illness when temperatures reach the high 90s.

Taking advantage of cooling centers, public pools, and air-conditioned stores and malls during periods of extreme heat can help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours each day can significantly lower this risk.
