The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal is urging residents to adhere to proper safety practices when using grills during the upcoming July 4th holiday and throughout the summer. According to officials, July is the peak month for grill fires, followed by May, June, and August.

Residents are advised to follow these guidelines:

- Use propane and charcoal grills exclusively outdoors.

- Position grills away from homes or deck railings and avoid placing them under eaves or overhanging tree branches.

- Maintain a distance of at least three feet between children, pets, and the grilling area.

- Regularly clean grills by removing grease or fat buildup from both the grill surface and trays below.

- Never leave a grill unattended.

- Ensure gas grill lids are open before lighting.

- Check propane grill gas tanks and hoses for leaks prior to each use.

- If you smell gas while grilling, immediately move away from the grill and contact the fire department.

- Cool charcoal grill coals completely before disposing of them in a metal container.

- Always have a fire extinguisher, bucket of water, or garden hose nearby.

The office encourages everyone to enjoy their cookouts safely and wishes all a Happy 4th of July.
