State Rep. John M. Cabello is advocating for lawmakers to reject lenient crime policies and focus on reducing crime in communities.

Rep. Cabello has taken a stance against Chicago's crime policies, citing the SAFE-T Act and efforts to decriminalize drugs as contributing factors to community insecurity. He emphasizes that safer neighborhoods are essential for keeping families together.

Cabello supports law enforcement and first responders by sponsoring legislation like the Stand Your Ground Act, which aims to protect them during justified use of force. He has also pushed for rules on body camera recordings and stricter guidelines to deny pretrial release for criminals.

Addressing the fentanyl epidemic, Cabello notes that opioid-related deaths in Illinois rose by more than 38% from 2019 to 2021, with 3,031 deaths reported in 2021. He supports legislation aimed at curbing drug abuse, preventing overdoses, and enhancing community safety by combating illegal drug flow. Additionally, he has backed measures to increase criminal penalties for fentanyl trafficking.
