With the changing seasons, Illinois drivers are being urged to stay vigilant for deer, particularly during dawn and dusk hours. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) reported that in 2023 there were 14,862 crashes involving deer, with 663 resulting in injuries and seven fatalities. Over 41 percent of these incidents occurred from October to December, with November identified as the most hazardous month.

IDOT has issued several safety tips to help motorists avoid collisions with deer. Drivers should be especially attentive in areas marked by deer crossing signs and scan roadsides for eye shine from headlights reflecting off a deer's eyes. If a collision is unavoidable, IDOT advises against swerving; instead, try to graze the deer without entering opposite traffic lanes or veering off the road.

In case of a collision, drivers should pull over safely, activate hazard lights, and contact emergency services by calling 911. It is also advised not to leave the vehicle. For those interested in claiming a deer after an accident or reporting possession, resources are available through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) website.

Illinois remains the leading pumpkin-producing state in the United States. The state hosts approximately 650 pumpkin farms across top-producing counties such as Tazewell and Kankakee. In 2022, Illinois farmers harvested 17,600 acres of pumpkins—more than twice that of any other leading state—producing over 634 million pounds annually. About 80 percent of this yield is processed into pumpkin puree.

October 28 marks National First Responders Day—a day dedicated to recognizing the dedication and bravery of those serving on the front lines like firefighters, police officers, and paramedics. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, around 4.6 million individuals serve as career or volunteer first responders nationwide.

State Senator Syverson encourages residents of Illinois to take time on this day to express gratitude towards first responders for their service and commitment to community safety.
