A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of South Beloit Administration and Finance Department on October 25, 2024. The request was made by Rockford Sun, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The request seeks access to records pertaining to sales tax collected from retailers in the city from January 1, 2024, up until the present date. Specifically, Rockford Sun is interested in obtaining information regarding the monthly sales tax collected versus projected figures, the number of active retail locations paying sales tax each month, as well as the names of each retailer and their respective gross retail sales reported for each month.
As a media organization committed to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, Rockford Sun has requested these records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140). They have also requested that these records be provided in an electronic format for ease of analysis and dissemination.
Rockford Sun believes that access to these public records is essential for fulfilling its professional responsibilities. Therefore, they have also requested a fee waiver as a media professional engaged in disseminating information to the public.
The City of South Beloit Administration and Finance Department has yet to respond to this FOIA request.
