The Human Rights Campaign has released its annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI) scorecard, which evaluates the inclusivity of municipalities for LGBTQ individuals. The City of Rockford has been participating in this evaluation since 2018 and has shown significant improvement, increasing its score by 41 points over the years. For 2024, Rockford achieved a perfect score of 100 out of 100 for the third consecutive year.
Rockford's initiatives contributing to this score include adopting a Non-Discrimination Ordinance for city contractors, providing transgender-inclusive healthcare benefits, establishing a Community Relations Commission to address equality and discrimination issues, declaring June as LGBTQ Pride Month, appointing LGBTQIA+ Liaisons within the city and police department, and enhancing the distribution of information on city job openings.
Mayor Tom McNamara commented on the achievement: "The MEI Scorecard serves as a vital benchmark, offering cities a way to track their progress and ensure accountability. I’m incredibly proud that we’ve once again achieved a perfect score. This accomplishment reflects our unwavering commitment to fostering inclusivity for our employees, residents, and the entire community."
