Changes to Social Security will take effect in 2025, impacting the full retirement age for those born in 1960 or later. The new full retirement age will be set at 67. In Illinois, where over 1.7 million residents received benefits in 2023, individuals can still opt to claim partial benefits starting at age 62. Alternatively, they may choose to delay claiming benefits beyond the full retirement age to increase their payments.

In addition to the change in retirement age, a cost-of-living adjustment of 2.5% will be implemented based on inflation rates. This adjustment is expected to enhance monthly benefits by approximately $50 beginning in January.
