State Representative John M. Cabello has expressed his approval following the guilty verdict in the federal court case against former Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan. The jury found Madigan guilty of racketeering and bribery, citing his misuse of public office for personal benefit.
Cabello commented on the verdict, stating, "Madigan’s guilty verdict is proof that Illinois has long been a hotspot of government corruption and crooked politicians." He emphasized the need for ethics reform and urged lawmakers to prioritize rebuilding public trust, particularly those in Rockford who have ties to Madigan.
The jury's decision included ten guilty counts against Madigan, while he was acquitted on seven others. They were unable to reach a consensus on six counts.
Madigan's political career includes significant contributions such as being a delegate at the 1969-70 Illinois Constitutional Convention and serving as Speaker of the Illinois House for 36 years across two terms.
