State Representative John M. Cabello has introduced a bill aimed at increasing transparency among public officials in Illinois. The proposed legislation, HB1039, would require these officials to wear body cameras, a measure intended to prevent corruption and protect taxpayers from unethical practices.
Rep. Cabello stated, “For too long, Illinois politicians have played by their own rules while taxpayers foot the bill.” He questioned why politicians handling significant taxpayer funds should not be held to the same standards as police officers who are required to wear body cameras.
The state of Illinois has faced numerous instances of political corruption over the years, with some elected officials using their positions for personal benefit. Cabello's bill seeks to hold public officials accountable and prevent secretive deals that could lead to financial losses for taxpayers.
“This isn’t complicated and holds politicians to the same standards we hold law enforcement to —if you’re doing your job honestly, you should have nothing to hide,” Cabello added. He emphasized the need for an end to "shady politics" in Illinois and advocated for government accountability.
The bill is currently under review in the 104th General Assembly. For more information or inquiries, Representative Cabello can be contacted at 815-621-2196.
John M. Cabello serves as the Assistant Minority Leader and State Representative for Illinois’ 90th House District, which covers areas in Winnebago, Stephenson, and Boone counties including Rockford and Machesney Park among others.
