State Representative John M. Cabello has reintroduced a bill in Illinois to lower the legal drinking age to 18, provided the individual is accompanied by a parent or guardian. The legislation, known as HB1019, aims to align Illinois with Wisconsin's existing law and support small businesses such as pubs and restaurants.
Rep. Cabello stated, "If you’re old enough to vote, serve in the military, and pay taxes, you should be trusted to have a drink with your parents." He added that the bill promotes personal responsibility and strengthens family bonds while aiding local businesses.
Currently, Illinois requires individuals to be 21 years old to consume alcohol under any circumstance. In contrast, Wisconsin permits 18-year-olds to drink in bars and restaurants when accompanied by a parent or guardian—a policy credited with supporting small businesses without leading to an increase in alcohol-related issues.
Cabello emphasized the importance of freedom and fairness: "This is about freedom, fairness, and supporting local businesses," he said. He noted that Northwest Illinois is losing business opportunities due to its current laws compared to neighboring Wisconsin.
The proposal is now being considered by the 104th General Assembly. For more information or inquiries regarding this legislation, Representative Cabello can be contacted at 815-621-2196.
John M. Cabello serves as the Assistant Minority Leader and State Representative for Illinois’ 90th House District. This district includes communities such as Rockford, Machesney Park, Freeport, Roscoe, Loves Park, Rockton, South Beloit, Caledonia, Durand, Rock City, and Rockton across Winnebago, Stephenson, and Boone counties.
