Illinois ranks high among US states for romance

Dating back to ancient Rome, February has long been associated with romance and love. While the origins of Valentine’s Day on February 14th are varied, traditional practices such as gift-giving and sending valentine cards have remained constant.

Though not typically seen as a romantic nation, the United States hosts a variety of romantic traditions that shape the holiday today. Among its states, Illinois ranks sixth in terms of romance, thanks to its stunning scenery and rich history.

One of Illinois' most popular attractions is Navy Pier in Chicago. This 3,300-foot-long pier offers boat rides, sightseeing, bicycle tours, museums, theaters, restaurants, and special events year-round. A free fireworks show is scheduled for this Valentine’s Day.

In north-west Illinois lies Galena, recognized for its beauty and history. Known for architecture and outdoor activities like skiing at Chestnut Mountain Resort during winter or ziplining in summer, Galena also houses former President Ulysses S. Grant’s home. The city hosts various fairs and festivals including the Winter Carnival Weekend at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa.

Springfield in central Illinois stands out due to its historical significance as the home of President Abraham Lincoln and the state capitol building. The Capitol features a notable 405-foot dome made of stained glass in Greek Revival style. Lincoln's restored home offers guided tours showcasing his life as a lawyer and president.

The Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois covers 289,000 acres with lush forests and hiking trails. It includes Garden of the Gods known for its rock formations. Situated between Ohio and Mississippi rivers across 11 counties, it is Illinois' largest publicly owned land.

Illinois provides diverse experiences from skiing to beach visits to historic site tours. Visitors can explore numerous other attractions such as Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford or Millennium Park in Chicago.
