Congressman Darin LaHood of Illinois recently addressed the House Select Committee on China during its first hearing of the 119th Congress. The focus was on strengthening America's cyber defenses in the technological competition with China.
As Chairman of the House Intelligence Subcommittee on the National Security Agency (NSA) and Cyber, Rep. LaHood engaged with Rob Joyce, former NSA Director of Cybersecurity, regarding the significance of maintaining U.S. dominance in cyberspace to protect national security.
Rep. LaHood highlighted statements from John Ratcliffe, the new CIA Director, during his confirmation hearings advocating for more aggressive actions against China's growing global influence. "I believe this approach needs to be extended to the cyber domain specifically, to better allow the U.S. to leverage cyberspace capabilities and to safeguard our national security," said Rep. LaHood.
He also referenced a report by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which noted a significant increase in Chinese-related cyber threats across various sectors from 2023 to 2024.
