Illinois House Republican lawmakers have introduced a legislative package aimed at providing property tax relief to residents throughout the state. The announcement was made by Assistant Minority Leader Dan Ugaste from Geneva, alongside State Representatives Joe Sosnowski of Rockford and Tom Weber of Fox Lake. They emphasized the impact of high property taxes on Illinois residents and criticized the Democratic majority for not addressing the issue.
The state is known for having some of the highest property taxes in the nation, which has prompted many residents to relocate to states with more favorable tax conditions. The proposed measures by House Republicans include several bills such as HB 0009 for property tax relief, HB 1321 for tax district surplus, and others targeting homestead exemptions and taxpayer empowerment.
Representative Ugaste expressed concern over the burden on families due to high property taxes. He stated, "High property taxes are crushing Illinois families," and highlighted that Illinois ranks second in the nation for property tax rates. He urged consideration of Republican proposals designed to provide relief.
Governor JB Pritzker's recent budget proposal, which increases spending without addressing property tax reform, was also criticized by Representative Weber. He pointed out that past efforts like the 2019 Property Tax Relief Task Force were ineffective. Weber stated, "Years of reckless spending and unbalanced budgets have led the majority party to endlessly drive up property taxes with no end in sight."
Sosnowski's legislation aims to support homeowners and seniors facing financial strain due to fixed incomes. He remarked on the potential benefits of growth comparable to neighboring states like Indiana and Wisconsin, noting it could significantly boost Illinois' population if similar growth rates were achieved.
The legislative package will continue its journey through the Illinois House, with updates available on ilga.gov.
