State Representative John M. Cabello has voiced his opposition to Illinois' HB2827, known as the "Homeschool Act." The bill, which recently advanced out of committee, aims to impose new regulations on homeschooling and private schooling families in the state.
Cabello criticized the bill, stating, "This is another prime example of government overreach. Parents know what is best for their children—not politicians in Springfield. Homeschool is a way for families to access quality education and they shouldn’t be punished for choosing the best option for their kids."
HB2827 proposes that nonpublic schools register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education and mandates homeschooling families to submit a Homeschool Declaration Form. Noncompliance could lead to fines or imprisonment. Additionally, it requires school administrators to provide personal information about themselves and students to authorities.
The bill faces significant opposition from the public. Over 34,000 Illinois residents have filed witness slips against it, and many have traveled to Springfield to express their concerns regarding parental rights.
"Springfield politicians continue to push policies that strip parents of their rights," Cabello added. "This bill doesn’t protect children—it simply expands government control where it’s neither needed nor wanted. I will continue to fight to stop this attack on our freedoms."
Despite unanimous Republican opposition in the Education Policy Committee, HB2827 was approved and now proceeds to the House Floor for further debate. Rep. Cabello encourages those against the measure to sign a petition or file a witness slip via ilga.gov.
John M. Cabello serves as Assistant Minority Leader and represents Illinois’ 90th House District, which covers areas in Winnebago, Stephenson, and Boone counties including Rockford and Machesney Park.
