Republican lawmakers in Illinois' 104th General Assembly are campaigning against the state's Sanctuary State policy. They propose new legislation to tackle what they perceive as issues arising from unchecked illegal immigration. The Republican members are focusing on repealing the Illinois TRUST Act, which restricts local law enforcement from coordinating with federal immigration authorities. Since the start of the Biden Administration, over half a million illegal immigrants have reportedly arrived in Illinois, leading to increased pressure on state resources and a $2 billion healthcare cost burden on taxpayers.

The proposed legislative package is intended to return control to local officials, end incentives for illegal immigration, and ensure the safety and well-being of Illinois families. The proposed bills in the package include:

1. End the Sanctuary State – Repeal the TRUST Act (HB1317 & HB1345).

2. End taxpayer-funded health benefits for illegal immigrants (HB1456).

3. Exempt the Department of Corrections from the TRUST Act (HB3417).

4. Allow counties to opt out of the TRUST Act through a referendum (HB3241).

5. Ensure Medicaid transparency, even for non-citizens (HB3534).

The House Republicans argue that the policy changes will alleviate financial burdens and improve safety in the state.
