Individuals in Illinois are reminded of the upcoming requirement for a REAL ID or a valid U.S. passport starting May 7, 2025, to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. Not all residents will require a REAL ID immediately.
Current Illinois driver's licenses or IDs can be identified as REAL ID-compliant by checking for a star in the upper right corner. Without this star, individuals planning domestic travel or visits to federal facilities might need a REAL ID.
It is important to note that REAL IDs are not necessary for driving or voting. Many Illinois residents might find they do not need to obtain one immediately. The REAL ID application process is experiencing high demand, so residents without upcoming travel plans are encouraged to wait.
REAL IDs can be processed at select DMV locations across Illinois, including a designated Real ID Supercenter in downtown Chicago. Setting an appointment is advised due to potential limitations.
The application requires presenting documents that verify identity, Social Security number, residency, and signature, with a fee of $30, equivalent to that of a standard license or ID.
More information and verification of the need for a REAL ID can be found at realid.ilsos.gov.
