State Representative John M. Cabello from Machesney Park has voiced strong criticism of a newly passed bill, HB1237, that aims to ban native-themed school mascots and logos in Illinois. Cabello describes the legislation as a "political theater," arguing that it imposes unnecessary costs on schools without providing actual solutions or enforcement mechanisms.
According to Cabello, the bill amends the Illinois School Code to prevent schools from using native-themed mascots and logos, yet permits the continued use of uniforms or materials with such images. This inconsistency, Cabello suggests, reflects the legislation's focus on "political spin" rather than "actual change." He stated, “This bill doesn’t carry a penalty if a school ignores it.”
Cabello's concerns include the financial implications for school districts and taxpayers, as he perceives the bill to be an unfunded mandate. He commented, “We’re talking about a forced mandate that comes with no funding.”
Cabello proposed pragmatic options for schools interested in voluntarily transitioning away from native-themed mascots. These alternatives include modifying team names and school colors to reduce costs and avoid significant disruptions.
“There are ways to make respectful changes that don’t break the bank," Cabello remarked, asserting that the bill is predominantly "about woke politics."
As a proponent of responsible governance, Cabello has committed to opposing measures that place financial strains on local communities without yielding substantial benefits. "Illinois families are tired of it. They want us to focus on affordability, public safety, and quality education—not meaningless mascot politics,” he added.
