Peoria, Illinois – Congressmen Darin LaHood and Eric Sorensen issued a statement today in response to the USPS decision to keep originating mail processing operations at the Peoria Mail Processing and Distribution Center. This decision follows a bipartisan letter by LaHood and Sorensen in February 2024, which urged Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to pause any changes at the center.
"The Peoria Mail Processing and Distribution Center provides essential services to our community, small businesses, farmers, and veterans," stated LaHood and Sorensen. "We are pleased that USPS has committed to pausing any additional changes through 2025. Together, we will work in a bipartisan manner to protect high-paying and high-quality jobs in Peoria and throughout central Illinois."
The USPS initially planned to streamline operations through the Delivering for America plan announced in 2021. This plan would have impacted the Peoria facility, possibly leading to downsizing and increased mail travel distances.
In February 2024, LaHood and Sorensen expressed concerns about these potential impacts in a letter to the USPS and received a response from Postmaster General DeJoy in May 2024. DeJoy confirmed that any moves for Mail Processing Centers would be paused until after January 1, 2025.
On April 7, 2025, the USPS stated it would retain jobs at the Peoria center and would invest up to $8.8 million to enhance the facility as part of the ongoing effort to modernize the postal network.
