October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, focusing on encouraging screening, education, and prevention for breast cancer, which is the second most common cancer among women in the United States.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes. The organization states that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. In 2025, it is estimated that 316,950 women and 2,800 men in the country will receive a diagnosis of invasive breast cancer.

Early detection of breast cancer significantly improves outcomes. The five-year survival rate for early-detected cases is reported at 99 percent. Currently, there are more than four million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month aims to raise awareness about the disease and encourage individuals to make informed health decisions. Additional information can be found on the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s website.

Syverson has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State Senate since 1993 after succeeding Christine J. Johnson.
