State lawmakers have returned to Springfield for the fall veto session, a period when legislative activity resumes and proposals are reconsidered. Illinois residents are being urged to pay attention as discussions over potential new taxes and fees continue.

Some of the measures under consideration include a $1.50 delivery tax, expanded sales taxes on services, and a streaming tax targeting small businesses that advertise on social media platforms. According to lawmakers critical of these proposals, there is concern about how the generated revenue would be used, particularly if it is directed toward supporting Chicago and its transit system.

There is also skepticism about whether efforts to block these taxes in the current session will be permanent. Some expect similar proposals to return in January even if they are halted now.

David L. Syverson has represented Illinois's 35th Senate District since 1993 after succeeding Christine J. Johnson.
