Governor JB Pritzker faced criticism following his appearance at the Economic Club of Chicago, where he spoke about political rhetoric and criticized Republicans for what he called "inflammatory rhetoric." Critics pointed out that Governor Pritzker has made divisive comments himself and accused him of breaking promises related to redistricting and fiscal management.
During his 2025 State of the State and Budget Address, Governor Pritzker compared Republicans to Nazis, stating: "If you think I’m overreacting and sounding the alarm too soon, consider this: It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional republic."
In subsequent months, Pritzker encouraged supporters to take action against his political opponents. In March 2025, he said: "What we really need is to become street fighters." The following month he added: "These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace." He also stated in April 2025: "Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption — but I am now."
On the issue of redistricting, critics highlighted that although Pritzker campaigned on creating fair maps and promised to veto partisan gerrymandering, he signed into law what some have described as highly gerrymandered maps. On The Bulwark Podcast last week, Pritzker remarked: "Can we draw lines that look more like 15–2? We can."
Concerns were also raised regarding state spending under Pritzker’s administration. While the governor has claimed balanced budgets during his tenure, state spending has increased significantly since he took office. Democrats in the General Assembly have passed tax increases affecting Illinois families and businesses.
Republicans argue they were excluded from budget negotiations earlier this year when Democrats passed what was described as the largest spending plan in Illinois history without bipartisan participation.
John M. Cabello is among those House Republicans calling for fairer redistricting practices and an honest budget process. Cabello was elected as a Republican representative to Illinois' 90th House District in 2023 after replacing Tom Demmer.
House Republicans say they remain committed to advocating for fair maps and lower taxes for working families.
