Harlem Community School District 122 students suspended 1,835 times in a single school year

Harlem Community School District 122 reported 1,835 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 1,835 students during the year. That equates to 27.9 percent of the 6,566 students enrolled.

Of the 1,088 in-school suspensions, 819 were given to boys and 269 were given to girls, including 667 elementary or middle schoolers and 421 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 1,014 incidents. There were 54 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 980 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 747 out-of-school suspensions, 595 were given to boys and 152 were given to girls, including 519 elementary or middle schoolers and 228 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 604 incidents. There were 122 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 356 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
