Mercy Rockford Health System issued the following announcement on Feb. 26.
In December, Mercyhealth attained Magnet recognition again, as an entire, integrated system, a testament to its continued dedication to high-quality nursing practice. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes health care organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. This credential is the highest national honor for professional nursing practice.
“This is an important moment in the history of Mercyhealth,” said Deb Potempa, Vice President and System CNO at Mercyhealth. “Our nursing leaders and Magnet Champions led our entire system on this journey and prepared our front line staff from across two states to demonstrate their superior patient outcomes and innovation in the delivery of care to the Magnet commission. Achieving Magnet designation as a system is an affirmation that all of our hospitals, clinics, and our home health and hospice programs have demonstrated the rigorous standards required by Magnet and that our patients and our communities receive the highest quality care from some of the best nurses in the country.”
As the gold standard of nursing excellence, Magnet recognition is one of the highest honors a health care facility can receive. Mercyhealth is one of a few organizations in the nation to have received Magnet for our entire health care system including all components of its organization, all its hospitals, clinics, specialties, home health and hospice.
“Magnet recognition is a tremendous honor and reflects our commitment to delivering the highest quality of care to the over 2.4 million patients we serve each year across the region,” said Javon R. Bea, President and CEO of Mercyhealth. “Our nurses are the heroes at the front lines of care providing tireless service that plays an incredible role in the outcomes and experiences of every patient.”
“To earn Magnet recognition once was a great accomplishment and an incredible source of pride for our nurses. Achieving this honor, system-wide, and for a second time, underscores the foundation of excellence and values that drive our entire staff to work harder each day to meet the health care needs of the people we serve,” Bea adds.
Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and their communities, such as:
Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information.
Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates.
Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.
U.S. News & World Report’s annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care. To achieve Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. This process includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation and a rigorous 5-day visit and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.
Categories include: Nursing leadership, empowerment and recognition of excellence, education, professional nurse continuum and exemplary professional practice, nurse-driven research, quality improvements and new knowledge, innovations and improvements.
Health care organizations must reapply for Magnet recognition every four years based on adherence to Magnet concepts and demonstrated improvements in patient care and quality. An organization reapplying for Magnet recognition must provide documented evidence to demonstrate how staff members sustained and improved Magnet concepts, performance and quality over the four-year period since the organization received its first recognition.
“We’re a better organization today because of the Magnet recognition we first achieved four years ago,” Bea continues. “Magnet recognition raised the bar for patient care and inspired every member of our team to achieve excellence every day. It is this commitment to providing our community with high-quality care that helped us become a Magnet-recognized organization, and it’s why we continue to pursue and maintain Magnet recognition.”
