The Illinois Senate is considering legislation to amend the state’s Flag Display Act to prohibit state agencies or institutions from purchasing state or U.S. flags not manufactured in the United States.
Sen. Steve Stadelman (D-Rockford), who introduced House Bill 605 to the state Senate, posted May 6 to his Facebook page about his feelings on the importance of the legislation.
“This is the right thing to do," the Rockford senator said. "As a government, we have no business flying our state and nation’s flags if they aren’t made in America. Supporting our local businesses and economies should always take priority.”
The legislation recently passed out of the state Senate’s State Government Committee without opposition, according to coverage by Fox 32. It now moves to the Senate floor for consideration."
The current Flag Display Act already prohibits the purchase of “American flags except those manufactured in the United States of America,” according to the bill summary. The new legislation would add the state flag to the requirement. Under the Flag Display Act, such agencies and institutions must provide in their budgets for the purchase of flags as a necessary supply.
