Illinois House of Representatives District 90 candidate John Cabello thanked his supporters for the favorable results of Tuesday's Republican primary.
Cabello bested Village of Roscoe president and Marine Corps veteran Mark Szula.
“I am honored to have received your overwhelming support in the primary," Cabello stated on Facebook. "Words cannot express my appreciation. I will do my utmost to justify your faith! If you have a yard sign please take it down and keep it for mid October.”
Cabello, a Rockford Police detective and former state representative, is endorsed by many Republicans, and he backs many Republicans like Sen. Darren Bailey (R-Louisville) and Tom DeVore, according to Roscoe News.
Cabello was a state representative in the 68th district from 2012 until he lost his seat in 2020, Ballotpedia reported. He had less than 50% of the vote compared to Democrat Dave Vella who had 50.2% of the vote. Cabello is now running for state representative in the 90th district and he vows to oppose tax increases and the social agenda pushed by the majority party in the Legislature.
"I sought re-election this past November because I opposed the corruption and raw power exercised by the party in power and their leader Michael Madigan. Those in power outspent me five to one and threw everything they had at me," Cabello said in a statement.
The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 endorsed Szula in the Republican primary for state representative in the 90th district. The organization also endorsed Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Richard Irvin in the respective primaries for Illinois governor, Capitol Fax reported.
The 90th district includes Boone, Winnebago County, Stephenson County and Freeport.
