State Republican lawmakers in Illinois have reached out to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) with a letter urging clarity on policies regarding transgender athletes. The letter, signed by members of both the Illinois Senate and House Republican Caucuses, calls for alignment with federal guidelines that protect women's sports integrity. The lawmakers emphasized the need for participation in women's sports to be based on biological sex to maintain fairness.

The letter requests an update from IHSA on policy revisions to comply with federal requirements while ensuring fair competition for women athletes. Republican lawmakers stressed their commitment to protecting opportunities for women who have dedicated themselves to sports.

In another development, thousands of homeschooling families gathered at the Illinois State Capitol this week in opposition to House Bill 2827. This bill, known as the "Homeschool Act," proposes new regulations including mandatory forms and educational portfolios, along with potential criminal penalties for non-compliance. Opponents argue it threatens parental rights and could lead to further restrictions on homeschooling.

State Senator Dave Syverson expressed concerns about government intrusion into private education, emphasizing the bill's potential impact on homeschooling freedoms.

Meanwhile, Senators Chris Balkema and Chapin Rose voiced opposition to Governor JB Pritzker’s proposal to eliminate townships through a state-mandated approach. They warned that this could result in higher property taxes and reduced local services. The Senators advocated for local decision-making regarding government consolidation rather than a top-down approach from Springfield.

Senator Balkema introduced Senate Bill 1347 as an alternative, aiming to facilitate community-led consolidation referendums. This bill seeks to protect residents from unnecessary tax hikes while promoting efficient government structures where beneficial.

Additionally, a bipartisan effort is underway with Senate Bill 2323 aimed at combating human trafficking in Illinois. The bill proposes improved coordination among state agencies and enhanced support services for victims using a victim-centered approach. Key provisions include coordinated services led by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), expanded training for key agencies, creation of multidisciplinary task forces, and extended legal rights for survivors.

Senate Bill 2323 passed the Senate Criminal Law Committee on March 18.
