At a time of economic strain for families, Illinois state leaders are considering a $6 billion tax increase to fund what some describe as an expanding state government budget under Governor JB Pritzker. State Senator Dave Syverson criticizes these developments, highlighting the proposed budget increase of nearly $15 billion since Pritzker took office and the impact of new taxes on digital advertising, capital gains, corporate income, and estates.

Illinois is noted for having the largest overall tax burden in the U.S., and Syverson warns that these new taxes could drive up consumer costs and discourage investment, affecting family businesses and farms. The new revenue is also expected to support expanded government benefits, which include programs for undocumented individuals. Syverson urges efforts to advocate for lower taxes and economic opportunities to keep residents in the state.

Governor Pritzker has been criticized for prioritizing a national tour over addressing state issues such as high property taxes and unemployment, with Illinois having the highest unemployment rate in the Midwest. Under his leadership, Illinois faces significant population loss and ranks 46th in economic outlook. Syverson argues to focus on state issues rather than national politics.

In legislative news, Senate Bill 710, addressing deer overpopulation and its impact on farmers, passed the Senate. It aims to streamline permits for deer harvesting, offering additional permits for landowners who meet specific harvest criteria and free permits for landowners with at least 40 acres. This bill will go to the House for further discussion.

Additionally, Senate Bill 1773 intends to regulate xylazine, a synthetic drug linked to overdose deaths, by classifying it as a Schedule III controlled substance. The bill seeks to increase penalties for unlawful possession while protecting legitimate veterinary use. It now awaits consideration in the House.

A tragic event at YNOT Outdoors Summer and After School Camp in Chatham resulted in the deaths of four children, affecting the community deeply. In response, the community united to support affected families, with first responders receiving recognition for their prompt aid efforts.

Lastly, the Illinois Capitol hosted a ceremony on May 1 to honor law enforcement officers, including K-9 units, who died in the line of duty. Notably honored were DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputy Christina Musil, and K-9 Officers Nyx and Loki.
