The Illinois Senate Republican Caucus has urged Governor JB Pritzker to reconsider a proposed budget cut affecting services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The proposed $32 million reduction in Direct Support Professional (DSP) service hours could impact nearly 10,000 residents receiving care in Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILAs).

State Senator Dave Syverson expressed concerns about the potential cut. "When it comes to budget considerations, taking care of the most vulnerable in our population clearly needs to be a priority," he stated. He opposed providing free healthcare to non-citizens while reducing benefits for the developmentally disabled.

The Governor's budget proposal includes a wage increase for front-line workers but suggests cutting service hours, potentially eliminating 430 positions and causing a net loss of $32 million for community providers. Senate Republicans warn that this rollback could hinder compliance with federal requirements under the Ligas Decree and risk increased institutionalization of individuals with disabilities.

In response to rising energy costs, Senate Republicans have introduced a legislative package aimed at enhancing energy reliability and affordability. The proposals include creating an Illinois Regional Generation Reliability Task Force, repealing forced closure dates for coal and natural gas plants, and expediting permits for new power plants. Senator Syverson emphasized the need for action to prevent future rate hikes.

Meanwhile, Democrats are considering tax hikes to address a budget shortfall exacerbated by significant spending increases since Governor Pritzker took office. Proposed taxes include those on digital advertising, capital gains, corporate income, and estate taxes. Senate Republicans advocate for fiscal responsibility instead of additional burdens on taxpayers.

Legislation co-sponsored by Senator Syverson seeks to amend driving test requirements for seniors in Illinois. House Bill 1226 would eliminate automatic behind-the-wheel tests for drivers aged 79-87 while maintaining vision tests and other assessments as needed. This measure aligns Illinois' regulations with those of other states.
