A new law has been enacted to enhance protections for people with disabilities who live in community-based residential settings. Senate Republicans backed House Bill 57, which amends the Essential Support Persons Act by extending its provisions to include Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILAs). This change ensures that residents of CILAs have the same right to receive essential visitors as those living in other facilities regulated by the state.

State Senator Syverson commented on the significance of this update, stating, "this change upholds the dignity and independence of individuals with disabilities by guaranteeing equal access to the support they need, regardless of where they live."

Syverson has represented Illinois' 35th Senate District since 1993, following his election as a Republican to succeed Christine J. Johnson.
