Rockford Police Department issued the following announcement on Dec. 15.
Rockford Police officers ringing bells for the Salvation Army stop a shoplifter trying to steal more than a thousand dollars’ worth of merchandise. On Friday, December 14, 2018, at approximately 10:20 a.m., Rockford Police officers participating in “Battle of the Bells” against Rockford Fire Department were alerted to a male suspect shoplifting goods from Walmart (3859 Northridge Drive). When confronted by an officer outside, the suspect fled on foot. He was taken into custody after a short foot chase and now faces the below listed charges.
Danuel Schumacher, 37, Rockford: Retail Theft (Felony), Resisting/Obstructing an Officer
“While officers were volunteering for a noteworthy cause, they were quickly reminded of how important it is to remain ever-vigilant,” said Assistant Deputy Chief Carla Redd. “I am very grateful for the dedication the officers show to the community on a daily basis.”
Schumacher was lodged in the Winnebago County Jail. The charges against Schumacher are merely accusations. He is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
