MERCY ROCKFORD HEALTH SYSTEM: Mercyhealth Resumes Childbirth, Newborn and Child CPR Classes

Mercy Rockford Health System issued the following announcement on Aug. 13.

Mercyhealth resumes class registration for its childbirth, newborn care, breastfeeding and infant and child CPR classes in 2020.

Preparing for childbirth: Class prepares for childbirth as well as becoming a parent. Recommended for first-time moms-to-be and their support persons. Topics include labor, breathing and relaxation, birth delivery, pain management and postpartum adjustment.

One-day Saturday class, 9 am-4 pm:

Two-night Wednesday class, 6-9 pm

Two-night Monday class, 6-9 pm

Newborn care: This one-time class helps new parents learn the basics of caring for newborns in the hospital and those first few weeks at home. Topics include basic baby care, feeding, bathing, diapering, growth and development and safety.

S.U.N. Program (Siblings Understanding Newborns): Helps prepare siblings 3-10 for the arrival of their new baby brother or sister. Includes a tour of unit, lessons on diapering, feeding and holding the baby.

Breastfeeding: Helps moms-to-be and new moms learn the basics of a successful breastfeeding experience. Class is intended for mom and baby. Partners are welcome to attend.

Infant and Child CPR: This basic CPR class is valuable for new parents, grandparents or babysitters. This is a free, non-certification course. Classes are held at the Mercyhealth Prehospital and Emergency Services Center, 2623 Edgemont St., Rockford. To register, call (815) 971-1999.

Hospital tours are available to you and your support person at anytime during your pregnancy. A registered nurse will show you around and answer questions. Registration is not required. Go to the Women’s and Children’s entrance lobby at Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside, and tell the person at the visitor Information Desk you want a tour. Please, no children for this tour.

Childbirth, newborn, breastfeeding and S.U.N. classes are held at Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside, lower-level conference rooms, B1/B2, 8201 E. Riverside Blvd., Rockford. All classes are free for participant and support person. All participants are required to wear a mask and social distance.
