Illinois has been ranked as having the highest property tax rate in the United States. Data from the Tax Foundation shows that homeowners in Illinois paid an average effective property tax rate of 1.83% in 2023. This figure is notably higher than those found in neighboring states, which has contributed to some residents choosing to leave Illinois.

The announcement follows Governor J.B. Pritzker's approval of what is described as the largest state budget in Illinois history. The new budget includes close to $1 billion in increased taxes, additional fees, and temporary financial measures.

Senator Syverson commented on the situation, stating: "The Governor’s agenda is crushing working families, piling even more taxes onto Illinoisans. Instead of making life more affordable, Pritzker and his allies are choosing to spend more, tax more, and ignore real reforms that could actually bring relief to homeowners."

Syverson has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State Senate since 1993, representing the 35th Senate District after succeeding Christine J. Johnson.
