City of Rockford issued the following announcement on Oct. 27.
Tasha Davis was recently named the first Executive Director of Rockford Promise. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, an MBA from Colorado Tech and a doctorate in leadership and education from Governor’s State in University Park.
Rockford Promise grew out of the College Promise movement that began in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In 2005, an anonymous group of wealthy families, concerned about the economic future of the city, announced they would fund the entire college educations of graduates of Kalamazoo public high schools as long as they went to Michigan colleges or universities.
Locally, Rockford Promise began in 2006. In 2011, the group raised enough to offer four students $500 each in scholarships. By 2016, the organization was able to start making larger, longer-term commitments with two students receiving full scholarships to Rockford University and three to Rock Valley College.
The ultimate goal is to match Kalamazoo and raise enough money to ensure that every graduate of Rockford Public Schools can go to college if they so choose. Bringing in a full-time, paid executive director was the next step.
“I am the mission of Rockford Promise,” said Davis. “I grew up in public housing. I was the first person in my family not just to graduate college but high school. I came from public school systems that had lots of gaps. I can share my testimony. That’s what attracted me to Rockford Promise. They are transforming lives and that will transform the economy.”
