CITY OF ROCKFORD: Let’s give a shout out to the staff at the City’s 911 Center!

Emergency

City of Rockford issued the following announcement on Dec. 28.

Let’s give a shout out to the staff at the City’s 911 Center! They are truly the first point of contact for residents in an emergency. Through November, staff have answered 96,032 911 calls and 85,119 non-emergency calls this year!

Here are some more interesting facts about our 911 Center staff:

• All telecommunicators are certified in Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and CPR.

• There are approximately 45 employees who staff the 911 Center in total. Ten to 12 employees are there 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Staff includes telecommunicators, supervisors and IT personnel.

• Our 911 Center dispatches for Rockford Fire and Police, as well as for several outlying suburban fire departments.

• During the most recent application period for the 911 telecommunicator position, the City received more than 250 applicants for the position.

• The City requires an applicant to type at least 40 words per minute — which is one of the first steps in the hiring process — and a core requirement.

• On average, it takes approximately nine months for a new telecommunicator to train and learn the job.

We wrote this post several days ago, but it seems even more appropriate after last night's tragic incident. Thank you, staff of the 911 Center, for all you do!
