Boone County Republicans Chairman Dave Syverson said that Stellantis' decision to create 1,500 jobs in Illinois underscores former President Donald Trump's influence in promoting economic growth in communities such as Boone County. Syverson made this statement to the Rockford Sun on January 27.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Stellantis plans to restart its idled Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois, with production of a new midsize truck expected to commence within two years. The company also plans investments in facilities located in Toledo, Ohio, and Kokomo, Indiana. In a letter addressed to employees, North America Chief Operating Officer Antonio Filosa credited discussions between Stellantis Chairman John Elkann and Trump regarding the strengthening of U.S. auto manufacturing and jobs as a contributing factor in the decision. This move resolves a significant issue from the 2023 United Auto Workers (UAW) contract negotiations by bringing 1,500 workers back to Belvidere and enhancing Stellantis' manufacturing presence in the United States.
Senator Syverson, who resides in Belvidere, was first elected chairman of the Boone County Republican Party in 2022. According to the organization’s website, he is "focused on boosting Republican voter turnout, growing the party’s membership, and communicating the party’s positions on issues that matter to Boone County voters."
