Gov. Bruce Rauner recently toured the site of a new medical complex in Rockford, which, when complete, will include a 451,000-square-foot hospital and 81,500-square-foot medical center, a release from the governor’s office said.
The new facility, Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center-Riverside, is a Mercyhealth initiative that will serve the Rockford area. When completed, the facility will become the state-designated regional perinatal center. It will be a Level III neonatal intensive care unit and a Level I trauma center, the release said.
“This is so impressive,” Rauner said while assessing the site’s progress, according to the release. “We look forward to seeing completion of this center, where mothers, children and the rest of us will get the very best care.”

State Sen. Dave Syverson (R-Rockford) and Mercyhealth President and CEO Javon Bea credited Rauner with helping to make the project a reality.
“Thanks to the help from Gov. Rauner, this major project became a reality,” Syverson said in the release. “The results are not only a new $505 million hospital creating hundreds of new jobs, but the spin-off of the partnership with Lurie Children's that is a game-changer for the community.”
