Governor JB Pritzker's proposed budget, characterized by significant tax increases and financial strategies, has passed the General Assembly. The plan is set to become Illinois' largest budget in history, amounting to over $55 billion—a nearly 40 percent increase since Pritzker took office.
State Senator Dave Syverson expressed opposition to the proposal, stating it prioritizes government expansion at the expense of working families. The budget introduces new taxes on vacation rentals, gaming, phone services, nicotine products, and businesses. Additionally, it includes nearly $400 million in one-time revenue measures to balance finances.
Despite these tax hikes, Republican lawmakers successfully blocked several other proposals they deemed harmful. These included a $1.50 delivery tax per package shipped within Illinois and a service tax on car repairs and personal care services. Another blocked measure was a digital advertising tax targeting small businesses.
Republicans warn that these proposals could resurface as part of Governor Pritzker's strategy to expand government while shifting costs onto those least able to afford them.
