July is recognized as Extreme Heat Safety Month, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) are emphasizing the importance of staying safe during high temperatures.

IEMA-OHS is advising residents to be aware of the serious risks that extreme heat poses to individuals, families, and pets. Extreme heat refers to prolonged periods of high temperatures over 90 degrees, often combined with high humidity.

To stay safe during extreme weather, IEMA-OHS recommends hydrating with water instead of caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. Residents should wear light-colored, lightweight, and loose-fitting clothing. It is advised to avoid strenuous activity during midday and use awnings or curtains indoors to block sunlight. Fans can circulate air but do not lower temperatures; air conditioning should be used inside homes or residents can visit a store or local mall. Knowing local cooling centers in Illinois is also important.

The agency warns against leaving children or pets in vehicles and suggests getting trained in first aid to assist those suffering from heat illness. Checking on neighbors and elderly individuals who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat is also encouraged.
